This is what Wayne Rooney's future holds for England, claims Chris Sutton Manchester United's WAGs

That is the harsh verdict of former Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea striker-turned-pundit Chris Sutton.

Rooney was dropped by interim manager Gareth Southgate for tonight's World Cup qualifier against Slovenia (7:45pm).

Despite being the Three Lions' record goalscorer with 53 goals in 177 appearances, Sutton reckons Rooney's international career is over.

"No. He’s been a great servant to English __football but the next tournament is more than 18 months away," Sutton told the Daily Mail.

"If England want to do well at the World Cup, they can’t carry passengers and Rooney would be a passenger.

"The best thing would be to congratulate him on his career, thank him, then move on."

Rooney admitted yesterday that he is ready to answer the call whenever he is needed.

"My game now? Of course, I'm not denying it is in a difficult period," he said.

"I've been on the bench the last few games for Manchester United but that's part of football.

"I have to work hard and when I'm needed for both club and country, I'll make sure I'm ready."
