Ian Wright: These two Premier League stars can easily replace Wayne Rooney The rise and fall of Wayne Rooney on FIFA

Rooney has been heavily criticised in recent weeks for club and country and was booed during England's 2-0 win over Malta last weekend.

The 30-year-old has been dropped by Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho and will reportedly sit out tonight's World Cup qualifier against Slovenia (7.45pm).

However, former Arsenal striker Wright doesn't think Rooney's absence will be a loss for England in the long run, tipping Rashford and Alli to step up.

"Wayne Rooney will leave almighty boots for someone to fill," he told The Sun.

Rashford and Alli

Ian Wright thinks Marcus Rashford and Dele Alli can replace Wayne Rooney for England

"But rather than one man doing so, I don’t see any reason why it can’t be two of the brightest young talents in the game — Marcus Rashford and Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli.

"I know Rashford won’t start in Slovenia, but it is only a matter of time before he is a regular.

"We’ve all been amazed at how he’s burst through and taken every step up in his laid-back stride.

"I’d love to see England playing him up top, as a genuine No 9, with Dele just in behind and pulling all the strings."

Rashford has already broken through at United and was tipped last month by team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic to "take over everything" in the next few years.

Alli, meanwhile, has continued to rise at Spurs after a stunning debut season and has featured in all seven Premier League games this term, scoring twice.
