Villa are currently on the hunt for a new manager after dismissing Roberto Di Matteo last Monday.

The Italian was sacked following a woeful start to the season, with the recently-relegated side sitting 19th in the Championship after just one win in 11 games.

Former Birmingham boss Steve Bruce has confirmed he has held talks with the Midlands club and is expecting an update on their decision this week.

And Lambert, who was previously in charge of the Villans from 2012 to 2015, has backed Bruce for the Villa hotseat after ruling himself out of a shock return.

“No, I would never go back,” the Scot told Sky Sports when asked whether he would ever go back to Villa.

“It’s for somebody else to take the reins.

Steve Bruce

He added: “Steve Bruce is a brilliant candidate for it. He’s charismatic as well. I think if you are asking me who I think should get the job, Steve should fill the gap.

“At Aston Villa you've got to have a big presence at the club, the fans are desperate for success and sometimes players can crumble when there is too much pressure to perform.

“Whoever gets the job will have to get the team to win at Villa Park, if they do that they stand a chance.”
