31: ENGLAND 1-0 MALTA
Our man Matt Dunn is at Wembley and here's what he makes of the action so far:
"Bravery and excitement we were promised… so far both have been significant by their absence. It is no surprise that England are entirely in control but too much of the football is being played in front of Malta back four which is protected by their midfield four.
"Wayne Rooney’s eighth minute shot produced a theatrical if entirely makeable save from goalkeeper Andrew Hogg – certainly the Malta stopper would have been disappointed if it had found its way in.
"Ryan Bertrand’s injury puts Tottenham full backs on both flanks but so far neither have been able to go on the sort of marauding run that they enjoy regularly at White Hart Lane.
" Indeed, so far Jordan Henderson has been England’s most creative influence – slowly finding his range with some quarter-back-style passing which has given Gareth Southgate’s side a more direct approach.
"Sure enough, Henderson proves he is indeed the creator supreme! Header steered cleverly inside far post by Sturridge, unconvincing Tim Henman-esque punch in the air from Gareth Southgate very much the preserve of the middle classes. At least England are on their way…"
