Arsenal recorded a convincing 4-1 victory over Basel to secure themselves a spot as Group A winners in the Champions League to progress to the last-16.

Lucas Perez’s impressive display saw him score a hat-trick, before Alex Iwobi added his name to the scoresheet.

Ozil provided the assist for the Nigerian, taking his tally to 23 assists in the Champions League since he made his debut in the competition in 2007 - only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have more.

Meanwhile Alexis Sanchez, fresh from his hat-trick against West Ham on Saturday, had a relatively quiet night by his standards.

But Nicholas, who made 151 league appearances for the Gunners, enjoyed the talented duo’s display.

"Arsenal have got their swagger back and were in the groove," he told Sky Sports. "He didn't score tonight but Alexis Sanchez, alongside Mesut Ozil, was absolutely fabulous to watch.

"The players that came in also did well. Lucas Perez got a hat-trick, Alex Iwobi scored, Kieran Gibbs basically got three assists and Rob Holding also played well at the back. So it's all good news and a happy December so far.”

Arsenal will be hoping to avoid making it seven consecutive exits at the last-16 stage when they face their next opponents in the New Year.

And Nicholas believes the quality in depth of Arsenal’s squad could take them further in the competition this time round.

He added: ”The squad's so strong. You've got Walcott on the bench, you've got Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been getting the nod ahead of the likes of Iwobi, who also grabbed a goal. Now Wenger's got a fabulous headache.

"It's amazing what a competitive edge does to a group because you don't need to be the best of mates, but in training, you'll feel the spirit, you'll feel the togetherness and you'll feel the endeavour that you've got to be at the top of your game to impress the manager."

Arsenal will find out who they’ll face in the next round when the draw is made on Monday.
