And Gerrard believes Wenger spent well, although one of his most influential signings came in 2015 when Petr Cech joined from Chelsea.

The talented goalkeeper has been Arsenal’s No.1 for some time, but Wenger has continued to give David Ospina the chance to feature in the Champions League - a decision Rio Ferdinand has criticised.

Gerrard shares the same view as the former Manchester United defender, and has called for Wenger to swap the Colombian for Cech when Arsenal continue their Champions League campaign in the New Year.

“There's been areas of the Arsenal team that are not good enough, [but] I think Arsene Wenger has bought well," Gerrard told BT Sport.

“I think looking at the strongest XI now on paper they look tougher, certainly through the spine.

"They've bought a couple of big defenders, and I think now Petr Cech being there for a couple of years.

"He's huge, especially when you go into the latter stages of this competition, you need a strong back five."

"For me it's a no-brainer, you've got to play Petr Cech.

"It's OK in a group game or a game like tonight where there's not really too much on the line, but when you go into the last-16 it's got to be Petr Cech for me."

Arsenal will find out who they’ll face in the last-16 of the compeitition when the draw is made on Monday.
