Jamie Carragher praises Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold after Liverpool win

Jamie Carragher thinks Trent Alexander-Arnold's performance against Leeds proves he's capable of challenging for a place in the Liverpool side

Jamie Carragher praised Liverpool's star youngsters after the 2-0 win over Leeds in the EFL Cup quarter-final on Tuesday, and says their performances were a credit to Jurgen Klopp.

Ben Woodburn became Liverpool's youngest-ever scorer, notching the second at the Kop late on, while right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold set up Divock Origi's opener with a superb cross.

Woodburn, 17, and Alexander-Arnold, 18, have impressed in their cameo appearances for the first team, and Sky Sports pundit Carragher says Alexander-Arnold in particular is ample back-up for Nathaniel Clyne.

"I think we now know why Jurgen Klopp went in with only one recognised right-back this season. His performance tonight, and again against Spurs, I think we know now.

"Sometimes you just look at a younger player and they look like an athlete. It's perfect for the full-back position, and you think he's 18 now, imagine what he'll be like in four years' time.

"He looks like he's already got the legs and the pace, the strength is going to come now too.

"Clyne is an England right-back now, Trent Arnold has a long way to go, but if you're going to have an 18-year-old as your second choice, with the size of the club and with Liverpool fighting on all fronts, it shows the faith Jurgen Klopp has got in him.

"It's massive credit to Jurgen Klopp, and the academy staff in Alex Inglethorpe, Steve Heighway, but never, ever forget it's still the player who has got to do it on the pitch. He's played twice and has been outstanding."

Woodburn beat Michael Owen's record as youngest Liverpool goalscorer, slamming home at the far post to put the game beyond the spirited Leeds.

Carragher, who came up through the ranks at Liverpool himself, says Woodburn and Alexander-Arnold have taken the  chances given to them so far.

"I always think people like Michael (Owen) and people like Robbie Fowler, strikers who went on to have fantastic careers at Liverpool, always made an impact early on.

"Whatever that lad does in his career, he'll never forget that moment. The roar of the crowd as he's running away.

"We always want young players to get a chance, but you can't expect 10 or 12 appearances as a young player. You might get one, two or three games. You've got to make an impact.

"Trent Alexander-Arnold in two games has been outstanding. This lad comes in and scores a goal so you know already the manager will have the faith."

However, according to Lindelof's representative Hasan Cetinkaya, United will face competition to sign the highly-rated 22-year-old.

"I don't want to comment on various clubs but there is concrete interest from some of the biggest in Europe," Cetinkaya told Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen.

"'Vigge' really enjoys it at Benfica, at the same time, as I have said before, there is no smoke without fire when it comes to that many clubs that are interested in him, but Victor is focused on Benfica."

United have been told they only be able to sign Lindelof if Benfica fail to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Benfica have one match remaining in Group B against Napoli on December 6 and they will not allow Lindelof to leave the Estadio da Luz if they progress to the next stage of the competition.

Liverpool can win the league if Jurgen Klopp spends £50m on this player - Paul Merson Liverpool predicted line-up to face Leeds United in the EFL Cup

That's the view of former Arsenal midfielder-turned-pundit Paul Merson.

The Southampton ace has been linked with a move to Liverpool over the last week with Jurgen Klopp keen to strengthen his defence.

Manchester United and Manchester City are both said to be keen on making a move for the former Celtic man too however, with Jose Mourinho a big fan and Pep Guardiola seeing him as as Vincent Kompany's replacement.

Liverpool sit second in the table after a strong start, but conceding goals has been a problem for Klopp's men.

If they can go out and get Van Dijk, I think £50 million, that nearly wins you the Premier League

Paul Merson

And Merson reckons the Reds should go all out for the Dutchman if they want to be lifting the Premier League trophy in May.

“For me, I think if Liverpool get together and go and buy Van Dijk for £50 million in January, they will take some beating," Merson told talkSPORT.

“They’ve got the firepower going forward, I just don’t think they’ve got it at the back.

Jurgen Klopp

Paul Merson has urged Jurgen Klopp to sign Virgil van Dijk

“I know they’ve done it this season so far, but defensively they aren’t going to be good enough [against the big teams].

“But if they can go out and get Van Dijk, I think £50 million, that nearly wins you the Premier League.”

Liverpool will be hoping to close the gap on leaders Chelsea when they take on Bournemouth on Sunday (1.30pm).

Huddersfield 1 - Wigan 2: Wildschut strikes to give Joyce first win as Latics boss Championship top scorer odds 2016/17

Wildschut

Wildschut scored to give Warren Joyce a first win as Wigan boss

The Dutch winger has been pushed into the centre by Joyce while Adam Le Fondre and Craig Davies are forced to sit it out. And his pace on the break proved decisive twice to boost Wigan’s survival hopes as Huddersfield’s slide from the Championship summit continued.

Wildschut burst clear five minutes before the break to tee up Reece Burke to slot in his first goal since joining on a season’s loan from West Ham.

And after Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy touched in Nahki Wells’s low ball to equalise, the former Middlesbrough man popped up again to score himself.

Wildschut had not found the net since April, but he showed no sign of nerves on the hour mark as he raced clear on to Max Power’s dinked through pass and went round keeper Danny Ward to score.

It was a tough night for early-season leaders Huddersfield, who are now hanging on to a top-six spot after a run of just one win in seven league matches.

Boss David Wagner suffered a double blow as he lost captain Mark Hudson and winger Sean Scannell to first-half injuries.

But they should have had a penalty soon after going 2-1 down, as Wells looked to be clipped by Latics full-back Luke Garbutt – but referee Tony Harrington was unsighted.
