Football News Transfer news: Andre Schurrle nears Chelsea exit after agreeing personal terms with Wolfsburg

Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle is inching closer to a move back to the Bundesliga after agreeing to personal terms with Wolfsburg, according to Sky sources.

A fee has yet to be agreed for the player but the two sides remain in negotiations and Chelsea are expected to receive in excess of £20m for the 24-year-old.

Blues manager Jose Mourinho said last week he expects to reach the end of the window with the same squad but admitted a departure is possible in the event of "a phenomenal offer and a player super keen of accepting the challenge".

Wolfsburg are currently second in the Bundesliga and Schurrle would like to join the 2009 champions after growing frustrated with a lack of regular playing time at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are close to agreeing a deal with Fiorentina for winger Juan Cuadrado who will be brought in as a replacement for Schurrle.

Cuadrado has a buyout clause of £26.8m but the cost of that deal will be largely financed by the sale of Schurrle.

Schurrle has started five games and made nine substitute appearances in Chelsea’s 22 league this season, scoring three goals in the process.

Eto'o leaves Goodison Park just five months and 20 appearances after joining the club following the end of a spell at Chelsea.

An Everton statement said the Cameroon striker has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal, but a tweet from the 33-year-old put the length of the contract at three-and-a-half years.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez said: "We thank Samuel for his efforts and for bringing his know-how to the team and to Finch Farm where he passed on some of his terrific experience to all of the young players in particular.

"The memory of his performances in Europe stand out especially. On behalf of all Evertonians, we wish him well for the next chapter in his career."

Eto'o, who previously spent two years in Serie A with Inter, scored four goals in his short time on Merseyside and helped Everton reach the knockout stage of the Europa League, where they will play Young Boys.

He wrote on his Instagram account: "Dear Toffees. I've been blessed to spend these past few months with you.

"To my pleasure, I have discovered here a crowd of warm, passionate, affectionate and supportive fans... It's time for me to leave, but wherever I go, I will bring with me all the memories we've built together."

Liverpool and Balotelli have struggled to adapt to the needs of the other, but the Italy striker is happy at the club according to his agent.

Mino Raiola, who also includes Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as clients, believes the Italy international will return "stronger than ever.".

Mino Raiola: Insists Balotelli gets on well with Brendan Rodgers

"Yes, he is happy at Liverpool," said Raiola after Balotelli was left out of the squad to face Bolton in the FA Cup at the weekend.

"Nobody is happy to be left out but he reacted in a professional way."

Balotelli arrived at Anfield with a tough act to follow after the prolific Luis Suarez scored 31 Premier League goals on the way to a tilt at the title.

"They are different players," he added. "Liverpool knew that and people need to know he is not Suarez. Mario needs to adapt and Liverpool need to adapt."

Following the summer move from AC Milan, Balotelli is yet to register a Premier League goal and has started just eight games after problems with injury and form.

Raiola continued: "He was injured and moved to a big club. Mario will win this struggle and become better. It is then up to Brendan Rodgers to give him a chance."

So how is his relationship with Rodgers?

"They're talking and it is a good relationship," explained the agent. "Mario likes him. They do not agree on everything. It is technical reasons they don't agree on but Mario will strive to give the manager what he wants. This move was the right thing to do in his career. He's still one of the best in the world."

Rodgers says Balotelli is a 'good boy' and will get chances to impress as he rubbished reports the striker could leave in his window.

Raiola agrees, saying: "We didn't ask to leave. It is too early, with the injury, to say we leave in January. There are no big problems. He's adapting to a new style that the manager wants. We'll see in the summer."

Balotelli is yet to score in the Premier League for Liverpool and did not even make the bench for Saturday's FA Cup tie against Bolton, prompting speculation his chances of succeeding at Anfield have already passed.

But Rodgers says he would never write off any player for good and has challenged the Italian striker to force his way back into his plans.

"We'll give Mario every chance," he said. "We brought him here this season to give him every chance to show he can play consistently at the top in a team at this level.

"It has been a difficult perod for him, but he's a good boy who wants to fight for his opportunity here. I've seen some clippings this morning saying that's him over with, and it's not the case at all.

"I think I've shown here a number of times - players that have been out of the fold for various reasons, if they work hard every day in training and show the intensity and focus then they've every chance of getting back in the team - and not only of getting back in the team, but staying there. So the opportunity's there for Mario and for every player."

Balotelli's path to the starting line-up will be further blocked by the imminent return of Daniel Sturridge, who trained on Sunday after five months out with a thigh injury.

The England striker could make his comeback in the Capital One Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Tuesday, with the tie evenly poised after a 1-1 first-leg draw at Anfield.

Rodgers said: "He trained very, very well, and that was as comfortable as he's looked. Even when he was coming back before [from a previous injury] he was bit tentative, but I thought he looked back to normal.

"We'll see how he feels - if he's not ready we won't risk it. He's been out a long time and we just need to make sure he's ready and feels ready."

The Serie A club are reluctant to let the Colombian winger leave for anything less thant his £26.8m buyout clause, and Sky Sports News HQ understands discussions are still ongoing over a potential move to Stamford Bridge before the deadline.

No formal offer has yet been accepted for Cuadrado, who played for Fiorentina against Roma on Sunday, and his current manager Vincenzo Montella is at pains to let him leave following 21 goals in 82 appearances for the club.

Montella said last week: “I believe, as of today, there are no possibilities he will leave Fiorentina. He knows this and that these situations get exaggerated.

“I’m not angry with the media, In this case I’m not referring to the media, but to football. All that is being said is just talk and nothing more. The player is not involved in all of this.”

Sky sources understand Chelsea made an offer of £20.6m for Cuadrado, which was turned down last Wednesday.

The deal is believe to also hinge on the potential exits from west London of Mohamed Salah, who is of interest to Roma, and Andre Schurrle, who is wanted by Wolfsburg.

Football News Arsenal transfer target Gabriel Paulista: We profile Villarreal’s Brazilian defender

Arsenal are in talks with Villarreal over a deal for defender Gabriel Paulista, but who exactly is the much talked-about Brazilian?

Sky Bet

Football Betting

Bet £5 Get £20 Free

Name: Gabriel Paulista (Gabriel Armando de Abreu)

Age: 24

Position: Centre-back

Club: Villarreal

Nationality: Brazil

Born in Sao Paulo, Gabriel Paulista started his top-flight career with Esporte Clube Vitoria, graduating through the youth set-up before making his league debut in 2010 aged 19.

Three years later Paulista helped Vitoria to the 2013 Campeonato Baiano title, having been utilised on the left and right-hand side of a three-man backline.

La Liga-bound

Paulista was voted the best central defender in the tournament and in August 2013 signed a five-year contract with  Villarreal in Spain. Three months later he made his debut in a draw with eventual champions Atletico Madrid at El Madrigal and Paulista has not looked back.

Gabriel Paulista's defensive stats for Villarreal in La Liga this season

The Brazilian's performances this season have contributed significantly to Villarreal’s recent surge up to sixth in the table and progress through to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals - they are currently on a 15-game unbeaten run.

The Yellow Submarine boast one of the meanest defences in the division having conceded just 17 goals and Paulista could be just the centre-half Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been seeking.

Adaptability

Of great appeal to the Frenchman will be the defender’s versatility; Paulista is mainly right-footed but is also able to operate at left back as he has done on two occasions for Villarreal.

The player has also built a glowing reputation as a powerful, pacy, ball-playing central defender who reads the game brilliantly, is strong in the air and capable of man-marking if required.

Paulista's style of lay is thought to be ideally suited to the demands of the Premier League

Those attributes would appear to make Paulista ideally suited to the physical demands of the Premier League yet he remains a player with great potential who is far from the finished product.

“Gabriel needs to develop at the club, he is raw, but talented,” Spanish football expert Graham Hunter told Revista de la Liga.

This may explain why Brazil have so far resisted the temptation to hand him a first call-up to the national team, a factor that may adversely impact on Arsenal’s chances of obtaining a work permit for the player.

'Playing in the Premier League is one of my dreams'

Paulista, though, appears to have already made up his mind about joining Arsenal in this month’s transfer window.

With Arsenal and United both interested in the defender, Villarreal are holding out for bids to meet the 20 million Euros buyout clause

“The subject is being discussed by my agent and the club,” he said. “If I go to Arsenal it will be excellent. But if it's not finalised then I am relaxed. I am focused on my work here.

"My agent is working on making sure I continue being calm. Playing in the Premier League is one of my dreams. I have spoken to my agent about this."

€20m buy-out clause

Villarreal are understood to only be willing to allow Paulista to move to the capital if the Gunners meet the £15.25m (€20m) release clause in his contract.

But Wenger confirmed talks between the parties are ongoing and appeared confident of a positive outcome.

'If we think it is the right price, we will pay it'

“We are ready to pay the price for a player if he is good enough. If the price is right, we will pay," he said.

Wenger revealed that talks between Arsenal and Villarreal for the purchase of Paulista are taking place

"We are talking at the moment. Can we find an agreement or not? I do not know. We are slowly progressing, but there is a chance.

“We are ready to pay the price we think is right for a good player no matter what the price is. If we think it is the right price, we will pay it.”

And former Barcelona and Spain right-back Albert Ferrer thinks Paulista is worth his €20m asking price.

“He is a very good centre back who is important for Villarreal being their best defender and that is why they want the money in his clause,” Ferrer said on Revista.

Cambridge United News FA Cup fourth round: Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal blames pitch and referee after Cambridge draw

Louis van Gaal said the state of the Abbey Stadium pitch, referee Chris Foy and his players were all reasons for Manchester United’s 0-0 FA Cup fourth-round draw with Cambridge United.

Despite being the lowest-ranked team left in the FA Cup and 76 places below Van Gaal’s side in the football pyramid, Cambridge were good value in forcing a lucrative replay at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal was left frustrated with a lacklustre performance from his side but thought there were external factors that restricted them from making their quality count.

Louis van Gaal found plenty to blame after Manchester United's 0-0 FA Cup fourth round draw with Cambridge

“Every aspect of the match is against us,” Van Gaal said.

“We have to come here and the pitch is not so good. That can influence your playing style. The opponents are giving a lot more than normally and defending is always easier than attacking. Then you see the referee, it’s always the same. Everywhere I have coached, it’s always the same with this referee.

“I know it’s very difficult to beat such an opponent in these circumstances. I know that in advance – I said it in my press conference before the Yeovil Town game. We know in advance everything is against us.”

United did improve in the second period and created two good chances that were wasted Radamel Falcao and substitute Robin van Persie.

The replay could be worth up to £1m to Cambridge, who will take a cut of the gate receipts at Old Trafford, and although Van Gaal did praise the League Two side’s organisation, he was left angry with the errors his players made.

“We make the same errors as we did against Yeovil and Queens Park Rangers and we played in the same style as the opponent,” he said.

Richard Money was delighted with his players resolve against Manchester United

“That was our error. In the second half we played much better. We played along the floor and that’s a different style. It was a pity we had to wait until half-time.

"I was pleased but we don’t score and I have to give credit to this club (Cambridge) because they played very well and were very well organised. They played with their heart and they fought until the end. But we’re still in the cup and that’s the most important thing.”

Cambridge boss Richard Money could not hide his delight at his side's fantastic result.

He said: "It is difficult to put into words just how proud we are. When you get back in the dressing room and recover, you just suddenly start to think about what it means to so many people.

"This club has been in the doldrums for 10 years, out of the Football League, and suddenly here we are taking everybody back to Old Trafford. It's incredible."

Who is Martin Odegaard? We profile the Norwegian wonderkid who has joined Real Madrid

Every once in a while, a promising young footballer emerges and announces himself as a potential star of the future. But rarely do they come from Norway…

Step forward teenage sensation Martin Odegaard, the 16-year-old who, in the space of a few months, has re-written the record books in Norwegian football and has now signed for Spanish giants Real Madrid after a fierce race for his signature involving Europe's biggest clubs.

While the age of the internet and social media mean it's now nearly impossible for teams to sign prospective stars of the future with minimal detection or fanfare - one clip of Odegaard in action on YouTube has already been viewed more than two million times - the gamble that the signing will prove inspired in the years to come remains a hugely attractive one.

So, just what do we know about this wonderkid, who had the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool vying to sign him?

Name: Martin Odegaard

Age: 16

Height: 1.76m

Foot: Left

Position: Attacking midfielder

Club: Stromsgodset - 24 games, 5 goals, 7 assists

Country: Norway - 3 games, 0 goals

Odegaard made 24 senior appearances for Stromsgodset before signing for Real Madrid

What has he done so far?

At 15, even the most promising young footballers are still several years away from getting a sniff at first-team action. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, for instance, both had to wait until they were 17 to make their respective bows in professional football. However, that hasn’t been the case for Norway’s new starlet who, having first trained with the Stromsgodset first team aged 13, appeared in the country’s top league, the Tippeligaen, in April 2014 aged 15 years and 117 days against Aalesunds.

A month later and Odegaard was the Norwegian league’s youngest goalscorer. With his club having tied their new star to a contract to 2015 by then, a European debut followed via the substitutes’ bench in the second leg of Stromsgodset’s unsuccessful Champions League qualifier against Romanian side Steaua Bucharest.

With Odegaard quickly showing his eye for goal and, perhaps most impressively of all given his age, an assist, a maiden full international call-up arrived for Norway’s friendly against the United Arab Emirates in late August. Unusually for a debutant, the now 16-year-old played the full 90 minutes in the otherwise uneventful 0-0 draw, and subsequent call-ups followed for Norway’s Euro 2016 qualifying double-header against Malta and Bulgaria. Although an unused substitute in the first game, Odegaard came on for the second half in the second match - an appearance which earned him another significant record: the youngest player to ever take the field in a European Championship qualifier.

Norwegian sports journalist Marius Skelbaek gives the lowdown on the boy from Drammen

By the end of the Norwegian league campaign in November, Odegaard had played 23 times in the league - with 15 of those appearances coming from the start - and put Europe’s top clubs on red alert.

What do they say about him?

Cristiano Ronaldo: “[He is a] good player. He's a young boy who can still grow - he's 16 years old.He has a good future. We must give him time to learn and to take the best decisions, but I see a lot of potential in the player. [He has a] good left foot.”

Norwegian sports journalist, Marius Skelbaek, told Sky Sports News HQ: “He’s described as the best talent we’ve ever had here in Norway. He is far better than John Arne Riise, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and John Carew.

“John Carew was 20 when he moved to Valencia. Odegaard is the best talent we’ve had in 50 or 60 years. He’s a sensational talent. He could be the savour of Norwegian football. We’ve never had a Norwegian player linked to Real Madrid. That’s not usual to be linked to those clubs, who are buying the best players from the World Cup.”

Ex-Blackburn and Norway player Morten Gamst Pedersen: "For his age, he is unbelievable. His knowledge of the game is unbelievable and his technical skills are fantastic. I have never seen a player with so much potential."

Hans Erik Odegaard, Martin's father: "I saw from a very early age that he 'had the feeling', but I remember very well when I knew he'd be quite good. I was still playing and Martin must have been no more than eight. I was out on the pitch running some intervals. He was, as always, with me. When I was finished I wanted to go home, but we couldn't before he had done 50 more shots at goal."

The race for his signature

The teenager was in the Vicente Calderon stands to watch Real's clash with Atletico earlier this month

Having made such a record-breaking impact inside six months in the Tippeligaen, Odegaard’s performances quickly came to the attention of the rest of Europe, with a host of world-renowned clubs and managers all attempting to woo him.

Speaking last September, following his son’s international debut, Hans Erik Odegaard revealed that “almost every top European club has been in touch” with Manchester United and Bayern Munich among the teams most prominently linked initially. Since then, it’s hard to think of a leading side which wasn’t interested: Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid…

The youngster, a Liverpool fan, was invited to a training session at Melwood in early December, although Ajax manager Frank de Boer suggested the teenager should spurn the advances from Europe’s biggest leagues and move to Holland: “It’s incredible to see a young player doing so well. He should choose Ajax.”

However, Real Madrid have ultimately struck a deal. Now the world waits to see if he can deliver on the big stage.

Tottenham triumphed 1-0 against Sheffield United to secure a narrow first-leg advantage in their Capital One Cup semi-final, but Mauricio Pochettino's gamble to award Emmanuel Adebayor his first start since November 2 failed to yield the desired result.

With the teams still tied 0-0 on 64 minutes, the striker was substituted to a chorus of boos for the second time in four days having failed to break down Spurs' League One opponents.

It could have been a different story had Adebayor converted a first-half chance after collecting a long pass from Christian Eriksen, but instead he was forced to watch his replacement, Roberto Soldado, win the decisive penalty for Andros Townsend to score.

After excluding Adebayor from his match-day squads throughout the past two months, it was a surprise to see Pochettino swap the stick for a carrot on Wednesday evening, handing the forward the captain's armband in the hope it would inspire a match-winning display.

Match highlights: Tottenham 1-0 Sheff Utd

"I need to pick the best team for every game and we decide to pick him and we will try to take a positive result to next week," the manager explained before kick-off. "For us it's a very important game. We expect a tough game. We need to play our game."

It is difficult to discern exactly what Pochettino means by "our game", however, in a season that has seen Spurs labour to build a new identity, other than recording late 2-1 victories. Considering their best display of the campaign - the 5-3 win over Chelsea - relied on rapid movement in the final third and flowing counter-attacks, it can be deduced that was the manager's intention.

But that style of play is opposite to Adebayor's strengths as the statistics on Wednesday emphasised. Acting as a target man ahead of Harry Kane in the hosts' attack, the 30-year-old won more aerial duels than any other player on the pitch in the first half, but struggled to convince with the ball at his feet.

No other Spurs player, including keeper Michel Vorm, averaged a lower pass accuracy than Adebayor (69%) before the interval, while he missed the target with both of his two shots before being substituted. That he managed fewer touches than any of his team-mates before his withdrawal tells its own tale of a peripheral performance.

The striker's frustration at failing to influence the game could be seen in one first-half incident involving Sheffield United's Louis Reed. As he tried to shield the ball, Adebayor's hand caught the midfielder in the face, and he was somewhat fortunate to only receive a yellow card.

Given their recent animosity towards him, Spurs supporters may not have been too disappointed had the forward received harsher punishment. Despite professing his love for the fans after being jeered at the weekend, Adebayor faces a long road back to a harmonious relationship with the home support. On Wednesday’s evidence, the same sentiment applies to his role in the first team.

Sheffield United News Capital One Cup: Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough can't wait to play Tottenham at Bramall Lane

Sheffield United boss Nigel Clough cannot wait to go back to Bramall Lane for the Capital One Cup semi-final, second leg against Tottenham despite the 1-0 defeat at White Hart Lane.

Spurs 1 Sheff Utd 0: Highlights

Clough is relishing playing in front of 25,000 home fans in South Yorkshire after the travelling Blades fans made plenty of noise in north London, and feels his side are still right in the tie.

"We're in it and you heard what the noise 4,000 Sheffield United fans were making tonight, so when there's 25,000 in there next week it's going to be special," he said.

"We're going to give it everything we can."

Campbell-Ryce remains upbeat

Clough could not hide his disappointment though at leaving Spurs a goal down, and felt his side were good to come away with a draw.

"I'm disappointed at the one-goal deficit, I thought we were on for a nil-nil.

"I thought first half we were good and caused problems, but I'm disappointed with the way we started the second.

"But we got better as the game went on, and it's difficult to have that sort of belief when you come here that you can get a goal, we thought we could tonight."

Football News Jamie Carragher admits Liverpool have a job on their hands reaching the Capital One Cup final after Chelsea draw

Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool they will be in for a totally different game in the Capital One Cup semi-final return leg at Stamford Bridge after the 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Liverpool dominated the game but could not finish Chelsea off after Raheem Sterling’s superb second-half equaliser, and the former Reds defender fears they will struggle without a home crowd behind them.

He said on Sky Sports: “It will be totally different. What I saw from Liverpool tonight was them at their best.

"It will be totally different. What I saw from Liverpool tonight was them at their best, but it’s going to be a big ask at Stamford Bridge."

Jamie Carragher

“When you have that pace and penetration in your play, bring the crowd together and use the energy from the players and crowd together, they caused Chelsea massive problems.

“They won’t have that at Stamford Bridge. I’m sure they’ll take six of seven thousand Liverpool fans, but they won’t be able to use the crowd.”

Carragher, who won the League Cup with Liverpool in 2001, 2003 and 2012, says the Reds’ fortunes in the second leg will depend on how they set up against a Chelsea side who contained on Tuesday.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said his side deserved a win

He added: “Chelsea were very lucky tonight, but it will be about how Liverpool set up.

“Do they sit back? Go on the counter-attack? It’s difficult to go to Chelsea but that was a great performance tonight.

“They’ll be buzzing that they came back against the top team in the country, but it’s going to be a big ask at Stamford Bridge.”

Chelsea goalscorer Eden Hazard admitted his side weren't at their best

Former Chelsea midfielder and current Sunderland boss Gus Poyet agreed, insisting he cannot see Chelsea defending at Stamford Bridge as they did at Anfield, particularly Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.

He told Sky Sports: “I cannot see Hazard defending too much, or Costa, they’re going to be up front.

“Now the shape of Liverpool when they’re attacking has to be different. [Emre] Can; how is he going to mark? how isolated is he going to be?

Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea: Highlights

“It was a totally different Chelsea. Not the Chelsea that was aggressive at the weekend, they were holding, waiting.

“It was like the Chelsea of a few years ago when they won the league, making it difficult for the opposition.”

Despite leading for much of the Capital One Cup semi-final first-leg, it was Liverpool who enjoyed the lion’s share of the chances, with Blues ‘keeper Thibaut Courtois forced to make several fine saves.

However, Mourinho believes that Liverpool left themselves open on occasion, and admitted his disappointment at seeing his side miss an opportunity to take advantage.

“We played to the top of our potential and so did Liverpool, it was a proper semi-final,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“I think it was a fair result. Liverpool did not deserve to win this game, but we were in control.

“The way they played with three defenders we had a lot of space to counter-attack, but we were not very efficient in our passing.

“We had plenty of half-chances with the space we had, but with more quality we would have scored more goals.”

Jose Mourinho described his side's 1-1 with Liverpool at Anfield as a fair result, and believes the home side didn't deserve to lose.

Raheem Sterling scored a very impressive equaliser at pace in the second-half, carrying the ball forward and finishing expertly with his left foot.

That equaliser sets it up nicely for next week’s return leg – an encounter Mourinho is relishing.

“It is so difficult to play here, but I love it,” Mourinho added.

“Some people say that the League Cup is a secondary competition, but for big clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea in the semi-final it's not.

“I am not saying we are favourites, but Liverpool have to come and win at Stamford Bridge now.”

Gary Neville News Gary Neville slams Kevin Mirallas after Everton star demands to take penalty

Gary Neville says if Kevin Mirallas went against team orders to take a penalty in Everton's 0-0 draw with West Brom on Monday Night Football, the action is "despicable".

Sky Bet

Football Betting

Bet £5 Get £20 Free

Despite Leighton Baines being Everton's main taker and missing only one Premier League penalty in his career, Mirallas took it upon himself to take a spot-kick against West Brom just before half-time, before missing the target.

"If he (Mirallas) has done what I think he's done, gone against team orders, manager orders, and selfishly taken the ball, it's one of the most despicable breaches of team orders you can possibly have. You do not do that at any cost."

Gary Neville

Mirallas did not reappear for the second half as Everton boss Roberto Martinez instead introduced Bryan Oviedo, but Neville accepts Martinez's explanation that the Belgian was "not 100 per cent" and "feeling his hamstring" for the second period.

Neville said on Monday Night Football: "If he's done what I think he's done, go against team orders, manager orders, and selfishly taken the ball, it's one of the most despicable breaches of team orders you can possibly have. You do not do that at any cost.

"Leighton Baines, not the most confrontational type of lad, he's the type that has probably said: 'go on then, if you're confident'.

"But what usually happens in dressing rooms is your free-kick takers, penalty-takers are usually listed."

Mirallas took penalty ahead of normal spot-kick man Baines

Martinez said after the game he had no problems with Mirallas taking the penalty, particularly as he scored in the shoot-out defeat by West Ham last week in the FA Cup.

The Spaniard also claimed he wanted fresh legs in the second half, and that Mirallas wasn't moving freely after the penalty.

Mirallas' team-mate Steven Naismith echoed Martinez's words, but TV replays showed some of the other Everton players, particularly fellow Belgian Romelu Lukaku, point to Baines for Mirallas to give him the ball.

Roberto Martinez said Mirallas was substituted due to an injury

Neville said of Martinez's comments after the game: "I think [Martinez] is in a difficult position. We've got to read between the lines. They're in a professional environment in a very difficult job.

"You have to respect the manager in trying to protect his players."

Everton struggled to break down West Brom throughout the game, and are now without a win in all competitions in eight matches.

And Jamie Carragher, also speaking on Monday Night Football, agreed that Martinez could not villify his player.

Everton's Steven Naismith defended team-mate Mirallas

"He's got to say that. He can't come out and villify his own player. In reality if you're the manager, you've got to keep everyone on board, that's what managers have to do," he said.

"Craig Bellamy did it once at Liverpool, missed a penalty, and Rafa Benitez actually fined him after the game, in the League Cup at Birmingham.

"[Baines] is one of the best penalty-takers in the league. The pressure [Mirallas] is putting on himself taking it, the pressure is huge anyway, and if you're not on it, you know there's going to be ruptions afterwards if you miss.

"It doesn't matter how well you've been playing, you don't take the penalty off the taker.

"It takes you back to kids football - whoever gets the ball first takes the penalty, like 'bagsy'."

The benefits of sport

Organized sports can help children grow in many ways. Football fencing, sports provide opportunities for children to learn and master the skills, working with his teammates and coaches, and challenge themselves in a safe environment. They learn the value of practice and the challenge of competition. And on top of all this, sports offer natural and fun for children who exercise regularly opportunities.

But before you sign the kids to the sport, parents should take into account the personality and developmental level of the child to make sure of being involved in sport is a positive experience for everyone.

When children should start doing sport?

When thinking about signing kids in sports, consider how emotionally and physically ready to participate. Early registration can also be frustrating for everyone and can turn children of this sport forever.

Although there are sports programs for preschoolers, it is not until 6 or 7 years that most children develop the appropriate physical skills or attention required to listen to instructions and understand the rules of the game. Even preschoolers can start and run, it usually takes some time before it can coordinate the two skills. And usually is not until kindergarten or first grade children understand concepts like "twists" that are crucial to many sports.

This does not mean that children can not play sports when they are young. Sport can be fun for children and kindergarten, but should be less competition and have more fun opportunities to be active. Therefore, even if the children accidentally scoring for the other team or spend all hunting butterflies as they like, that's fine.

If you choose to sign his five years by a team, be sure to choose an alloy that focuses on fun and basic skills.

Choosing the Right Sport

If children show interest in a sport, let them try. You may be worried that your child will suffer, especially in a contact sport like football, tigerwoods but since coach asks players to use the proper safety equipment, the doctor is good it is, and that their child is paired with other children of the same size and capacity, below.

Our Spanish football expert Guillem Ballague has been told that Manchester United made the bid.

But this is being strongly denied by sources inside Old Trafford, and Valencia also say Otamendi will stay at the club in this window.

The 26-year-old, who has won 18 Argentina caps, started his career in his homeland Velez Sarsfield before moving to Porto in 2010.

Valencia signed him in February last year and immediately loaned him out to Atletico Minero in Brazil.

But this season he has been in superb form for Valencia, scoring the winner in their 2-1 victory over Real Madrid earlier this month which ended the European champions’ 22-match winning run.

His form has sparked interest from around Europe – and now a big-money bid - but sources at United insist it is not them who have made it.

Gary Neville News Arsenal can be proud of 'resilient and organised' win at Manchester City, says Gary Neville

Arsenal can be proud of their victory at Manchester City but the Gunners have to draw positives and build on the performance, according to Gary Neville.

"Everything we’ve said Arsenal have lacked in the last four or five years, they showed today - and that’s something they should be proud of."

Gary Neville

Arsenal secured their first away league victory to a top-four rival since October 2011 as goals from Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud sealed a 2-0 win and dented City's title aspirations.

And Neville was full of praise for an Arsenal side who proved him, and many others, wrong in producing a a complete performance at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsene Wenger was delighted with the organisation of his side at City

"I was wrong and I’m happy to be wrong," Neville told Sky Sports. "We’ve seen so many examples over the last four or five years of Arsenal capitulating that if you offered me the opportunity to come back as an Arsenal defender, I would have said no. It wouldn't have been much fun.

"I have to say, they get exposed and they have no appreciation of their defenders when they're in trouble.

"But today, they were protected all over the pitch. Bellerin got beat once in the first half by James Milner and Aaron Ramsey was close to him, and you expect that because in big games, you cannot rely upon defending one on one.

"I've seen it too many times with Arsenal. Today, the defenders were never exposed; it was one of the best back-four performances I've seen. Koscielny and Mertesacker probably aren't as tired as they've ever been. They were calm, relaxed, composed and didn't look in any trouble towards the end of the game.

"It was a really good performance and I’m happy to say that I was completely wrong last week when I tried to pre-empt a defeat for Arsenal."

Manuel Pellegrini conceded his side lacked the creativity required to beat Arsenal

Despite being impressed with Arsenal's performance, Neville challenged them to replicate this performance in both domestic and European competitions.

And while challenging the Gunners, Neville insisted nothing should be taken away from a display which demonstrated all the attributes desired in football.

"I think we’re probably going a little bit over the top because we expected to come here today and see more of the same from Arsenal," Neville added.

"I have to say the most important thing now is that they move forward and build on that, and don't go back to how they were in previous games when they came away from home.

Thierry Henry and Graeme Souness praised the performance of Santi Cazorla

"Not many teams come here and win so it's a big feat today what they’ve done.

“They can be proud tonight, they can go back on that train to London and they can all look at each other and think they’ve showed spirit, fight, discipline, organisation and resilience. Everything we’ve said Arsenal have lacked in the last four or five years, they showed today - and that’s something they should be proud of.

"The talent and skill will come out next week at home. Today was about those qualities and showing a different side of the game, and that’s what they did."
