The Champions League runners-up from the 2012-13 season are enduring one of the toughest seasons in their recent history, sitting bottom of the Bundesliga with only 16 points from 19 games.

Raul Bobadilla's goal for Augsburg, who were down to 10 men after Christoph Janker was dismissed, meant an 11th defeat of the season for Klopp's side and saw players attempt to placate supporters after the final whistle.

Goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller climbed to the top of the crowd barriers to talk with angry fans and long-serving defender Mats Hummels also spoke with a group of supporters, saying afterwards that the squad was doing everything it can to get out of their domestic predicament.

Right decisions

Hummels said: "We're always chasing games. What's missing is us taking the lead so that we can then sit back and play on the counter. We're all aware that we've got to fight in the next 15 games.

"Playing attractive football will just be a bonus, yet we are still expected to play that kind of football. We know that 98 per cent will be about fighting, the other two will be about loosening up so that we start making the right decisions in the final third."

But Klopp was more candid about his side's performance, admitting Dortmund are in major need of a confidence boost and something for their fans to cheer.

Klopp said: "The result hurts. But we should not pretend we have nothing to do with it. We could have defended their goal five or six times, and still Bobadilla was left unmarked. And we still fail to make the most of our good chances. 

"That’s why there’s little positive to say about today’s game. After the red card we failed to create anything of note. Our best chance came in stoppage time when Ciro was denied with a header. 

Lacking confidence

"There’s no doubt that nerves play a part in our situation. We need to bring them under control. We can be accused of anything tonight and it is all justified, but we won’t give up. We keep going. We had some good ideas but they were not enough. We have to be much more clinical in front of goal. 

"We were often opting to shoot too early after working ourselves into positions. In other situations we swapped the ball from the good onto the bad foot.

"We lack confidence there, and we have to work on it. We have to give the lads their confidence back. We create chances, and we see improvement, but the result is always the same. I’m very disappointed. We knew it’s not going to be easy. I can understand the fans’ frustrations."

Dortmund remain rooted to the foot of the Bundesliga table after losing 1-0 at home to 10-man Augsburg on Wednesday.

The defeat is the 11th of the season for the 2013 Champions League finalists and led to some of the players apologising to fans after the final whistle.

But Klopp, who took over at Dortmund in 2008, insisted he has no plans to walk away, saying: “I can rule out resigning. After only two games this year, the tank isn't completely empty.

"Resignation wasn't on my mind on Wednesday, so accordingly it's not an issue for me."

Klopp has been given a job guarantee by Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke on the back of four successful years which saw the club win the title in 2011 and 2012 and come second in the following two seasons.

But he is under pressure after the latest defeat to Augsburg and called on his side to ‘get a grip’ on the situation.

“The fact that nerves play a role in a situation like this is beyond question. We need to get a grip," he said.

"We have to give the boys some faith back. It's something we have already been working on the whole time, but clearly not enough."

Klopp also admitted he was surprised how badly his side reacted after Raul Bobadilla scored Augsburg's 50th-minute winner as panic set in.

"I thought we were above that, but we were badly shaken after conceding that goal," he said. “Our decision-making is poor. We have to be more courageous to allow ourselves to make the right decisions."

Dortmund will be without Kevin Grosskreutz for six weeks after the Germany midfielder tore a thigh muscle and he joins Ilkay Gundogan, Erik Durm and Lukasz Piszczek on the injury list.

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the striker and the club for a 'potential violation of regulations'. If found guilty.

Sakho played against Bristol City in the FA Cup on January 25, coming off the bench to score an 81st-minute winner after withdrawing from Senegal's Africa Cup of Nations squad with a back injury.

If FIFA find the Hammers available to the world's governing body is to expel West Ham from the FA Cup.

The Senegalese Football Association accused West Ham of a "lack of respect" and the relationship deteriorated further when the Londoners insisted Sakho was unable to travel to the tournament to be checked out by his national team's medical staff because the flight could aggravate the injury.

West Ham are adamant they have not broken any rules over Sakho, who was left out of their squad to face Liverpool last Saturday.

A club statement released on Monday morning read: "Diafra Sakho and West Ham United vigorously deny that they have acted in breach of FIFA regulations.

"They regard the proceedings as clearly unfounded and are requesting their dismissal. At this stage, neither the player nor the club can make any further comments."

Senegal were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations on January 27 following a 2-0 defeat by Algeria. The tournament runs until February 8.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce said: "If you speak to the lad you would know how angry and disappointed he is at being denied the opportunity to play football when it is not our fault.

"We have covered all the rules and regulations, but at this moment in time it is sensible to do the right thing and not get involved any more."

Sakho, who has scored 10 goals since arriving from Metz, could face a domestic suspension and the club handed handed a fine, if they are found to have violated FIFA's rules which require players to be made available for international duty.

The club have also been reprimanded but they will be allowed to continue to play in this year's competition.

Sakho, 25, had been due to join up with his national side at the Africa Cup of Nations but the Hammers informed the Senegalese FA that injury would prevent him from travelling to the tournament.

On January 25, Sakho came off the substitutes' bench to score the only goal of the tie at Ashton Gate – prompting protest from the Senegalese authorities.

West Ham issued a brief statement following FIFA's decision.

"The club and the player have received the decision and will now be focusing their concentration on the game against Manchester United on Sunday," it read.

A FIFA statement read: "FIFA can today confirm the decisions of its Disciplinary Committee in the case involving the English club West Ham United and the player Diafra Sakho.

"Diafra Sakho was called up by the Senegalese Football Association on 18 December 2014 to play for Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations 2015 taking place in Equatorial Guinea between 17 January and 8 February 2015, as well as to attend the training camp of the said representative team from 5-16 January 2015 in Morocco.

"The Senegalese FA was informed by West Ham United that Sakho was prevented from playing and travelling by plane due to injury and thus he did not join the Senegal team."

"The Senegalese FA was informed by West Ham United that Sakho was prevented from playing and travelling by plane due to injury and thus he did not join the Senegal team.

"On 25 January 2015, the player took part in an official match for his club West Ham United. Senegal were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations 2015 on 27 January 2015.

"In view of the above and in accordance with art. 6 par. 1 of Annexe 1 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (hereinafter the Regulations), disciplinary proceedings were opened against the player and the club for a potential violation of Annexe 1 of the Regulations.

"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has found the club and the player to have violated art. 5 of Annexe 1 of the Regulations in relation to the match played by Sakho on 25 January 2015. The club has been fined CHF 100,000 in accordance with art. 10 c) and art. 15 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) and issued with a reprimand, while the player has been sanctioned with a reprimand in accordance with art. 10 b) and art. 14 of the FDC.

"The terms of the decisions were notified to the relevant parties today."

Both Sakho and West Ham have been cleared to play in the next round as scheduled, where Sam Allardyce's side face West Brom.

But Bristol City issued a a brief statement of their own following FIFA's ruling, hinting that this may not be the end of the matter as far as they are concerned.

"Bristol City FC notes FIFA’s decision with regards to the Disciplinary Committee’s case against West Ham United and their player Diafra Sakho," the statement read.

"The club is disappointed with the penalty handed down by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee and is considering its options.

"The club will be making no further comment at this time."

QPR announced on Tuesday that Redknapp had decided to stand down and that Head of Football Operations Les Ferdinand and Academy boss Chris Ramsey would be taking temporary charge.

Redknapp said he was resigning due to the need for an operation on his knees but other observers pointed out that he was departing straight after QPR had failed to add to their squad on transfer deadline day.

The London side are second-bottom of the Premier League table and were expected to be active in the market, with Redknapp believed to be particularly keen to acquire another forward.

However, the 67-year-old told Sky Sports News HQ on Tuesday that frustration at the club’s inability to sign any new players played no part in his decision to quit.

“I have had a problem with my knee and it has been getting worse,” said Redknapp.

“My right knee, I had an operation a year or so ago, and I was on crutches at the training ground for about 10 weeks.

“It has gradually deteriorated again, my right knee, and my left knee has gone exactly the same, so I definitely need one knee replacement and maybe two.

“I just could not get out on to the pitch and do what I wanted to do.

“I love getting out coaching but now I can’t wait for training to finish because I’m struggling.

“Last weekend I went to watch the grandkids play football and, after 10 minutes, I have had to go and sit in the car.

Redknapp denies he was hell-bent on acquiring new players on Monday and says a possible loan move for Tottenham forward Emmanuel Adebayor would have been too costly.

Asked if he had wanted some additions, he said: “We tried but I could not say I was over-mad to. We could not find anybody.

“Tony was keener than I was, the chairman. He was trying for his life, he was non-stop on the phone to me.

“We tried one or two but there was nothing we were close to doing and I did not push Tony to do any deals.

"When I took over there were an awful lot of players who they had to get rid of, who were very expensive. I did not want to see them get in that position again."

“It was too expensive, I said that to Tony. You are not going to start chasing when people have got you in the position that they know you are desperate, because the price goes up.

“Tottenham were fine to deal with (regarding Adebayor) but the deal was not one we could afford really. So we scrubbed that one and there was not too much else about."

Regarding the state of the QPR squad, Redknapp pointed out that he has players returning from injury and that there are alternative options up front.

“(Midfielder) Sandro’s back this week, Yun (Suk-young) is back at left-back,” said Redknapp.

“We are short of a front man to help Bobby (Zamora) and Charlie (Austin), but (Eduardo) Vargas can play there.

“It was not a case of taking someone in.

“When I took over, there were an awful lot of players who they had to get rid of, who were very expensive. I did not want to see them get in that position again.

“I did not push Tony to do any deals and that was certainly not any factor in me deciding to call it a day. I could hardly walk this morning.”

Ferdinand will now take charge at Loftus Road alongside Ramsey on a temporary basis but Redknapp says there is no reason the former QPR and England forward could not become the permanent boss.

"It's up to Tony and the shareholders who they decide to pick," he said.

"Les is taking over and I am sure Les can do the job without a problem. He is a football man, knows the game, has been a top player.

"I think the players are there and, with one or two coming back this week, I think that will make a massive difference to the team."

Daniel Sturridge praised Liverpool’s team performance after they continued their impressive run of form to beat West Ham 2-0 at Anfield.

“The team is playing some good football, and we haven’t finished as many of our chances as we should have. Now, with Dan up front, we’ll get those chances and more than likely he’ll finish them and we’ll win games.”
