Manchester United have not made a bid for Monaco forward Kylian Mbappe, Sky sources understand

Monaco forward Kylian Mbappe has not been the subject of a £72m bid from Manchester United, according to Sky sources.

Reports in Italy on Tuesday suggested the Ligue 1 club had turned down the mammoth bid from United for the 18-year-old, but Sky sources understand this is not the case, with no such bid having been offered.

Mbappe has notched 24 goals for Monaco in all competitions this season, including five goals from seven Champions League appearances.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger recently admitted an interest in signing the teenage forward this summer, but feared the Gunners would be priced out of any potential transfer.

"Obviously it would be hypocritical and a lie to say that we are not looking at him," Wenger told French broadcaster SFR Sport.

The 18-year-old forward has already earned two caps for France

"But he's already in the bracket of clubs who are, perhaps, much better financed than us."

Mbappe has been described as a "huge __football talent" who "has similarities to Thierry Henry" by Wenger, and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in world football.

Frank Lampard insists Manchester United played for a draw at the Etihad against Manchester City on Thursday.

United earned a goalless draw at their Manchester rivals with a dogged display, though their task was made harder late on with Marouane Fellaini's sending off for a coming together of heads with Sergio Aguero.

Though United manager Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports after the game that they wanted to attack more, Lampard insisted the Portuguese boss did not want to go toe-to-toe with City.

Lampard said in the Sky Sports studios: "I'm slightly surprised. We did feel that he was going to defend deep. They definitely played for that. They didn't overcommit players at any stage. I think Martial played like a left-back at times.

Jamie Carragher echoed Lampard's words, saying Mourinho nullified Pep Guardiola, something he has done on numerous occasions to big managers in recent years.

"You had Darmian and Valencia not too interested in getting involved in the play in attacking situations, and that's why United had such little possession, because they had so little options for a pass.

Former United defender Gary Neville says United are at step one of two when it comes to going away to top-six sides, and says he expects Mourinho's team to be winning these types of games 1-0 in a year's time.

"I think if I'm sat here in 12 months' time, the next stage [for United] is to go there and win these games. That seems to be a little bit further away.

"Jose would probably say they've failed in an attacking sense, because they didn't do what they wanted to do, and that is to hurt Manchester City on the counter attack."

Manchester United's Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo have ‘significant knee ligament damage’

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had to be taken off for Manchester United against Anderlecht

Manchester United say that both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo sustained “significant knee ligament damage” in the win over Anderlecht on Thursday.

Ibrahimovic had been expected to miss the remainder of the season, according to Sky sources, and such an injury would suggest Rojo's campaign is also over with just five weeks remaining in the season.

United did not give a specific timeline for recovery and said that both players will see specialists in the coming days.

Both players had to be taken off in United's 2-1 Europa League quarter final win over the Belgian side on Thursday, with Ibrahimovic's knee buckling as he landed awkwardly just before the end of normal time while Rojo was taken off on a stretcher after just 23 minutes.

A United statement said: "Detailed investigations on the injuries sustained by Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic during Thursday's Europa League match have confirmed significant knee ligament damage in both players that requires specialist opinions over the coming days.

"Estimations of time to full recovery will only be possible once definitive treatment plans have been decided after these consultations."

Ibrahimovic, who has scored 28 goals for United this season, is out of contract in the summer and has yet to agree an extension to remain at the club for another year.
